Benefits of Skin Resurfacing With Lumecca

As you age, your skin begins to lose its natural elasticity and tone. As collagen breaks down, it forms wrinkles. This is evident in areas such as the face, neck, arms, and legs.

The InMode Lumecca technology allows patients to resurface their skin without downtime or harsh recovery periods.

In just 1-3 sessions, Lumecca improves the appearance of:

  • Age spots (red/brown pigmentations)
  • Sun damage
  • Freckles
  • Rosacea (redness)
  • Vascular lesions, such as facial telangiectasias (spider veins) and poikiloderma

Frequently Asked Questions

Lumecca is a powerful intense pulsed light (IPL) that is used to treat various skin conditions, particularly pigmented and vascular lesions. After just a single use, patients notice substantial improvements in the quality of their skin. Lumecca utilizes photothermolysis, which offers a photo facial through the delivery of a fast, easy, non-ablative light treatment.

In as little as 1-3 sessions, Lumecca improves the following conditions:

-Vascular lesions, such as facial telangiectasias (spider veins) and poikiloderma
-Age spots (red/brown pigmentations)
-Freckles
-Sun damage
-Rosacea (redness)

Lumecca can be used on nearly every part of the body, although the most common areas of treatment are those that are frequently exposed to the elements. This includes the face, neck, décolletage, legs, hands, and arms.

It is important to avoid tanning or direct, prolonged sun exposure a month before getting treatment.

We also recommend that you avoid smoking at least a month before your treatment and avoid retinoids that cause skin sensitivity.

Finally, it’s a good idea to drink plenty of water before and after your treatment.

During your treatment, you will experience a bright flash of light from Lumecca, as well as an elastic sensation that feels like a rubber band. Slight warming of the skin and redness are to be expected after treatment, although these symptoms usually go away within an hour.

Please keep in mind that 24-48 hours after your treatment, you may see a darkening of pigmented spots. You can expect these pigmented lesions to flake off during the week afterward, which will lead to an evening out of skin tone.

Regarding vascular lesions: After treatment, you may notice the vein blanch and disappear or the vessel change color. These effects will dissipate after a few days.

Improvements in your skin might be noticed after the first session, although multiple treatments will certainly lead to even better results. What treatment regime is needed depends on the severity of skin damage, skin type, type of treatment, and what settings are used on the Lumecca device.

Results for skin complexion and sun damage can be observed a few days after the first treatment. The skin will continue to look better over time, with the most notable results showing after a week or two. Naturally, having multiple photo facial treatment sessions will improve the end result.

Regarding vascular treatments (such as facial telangiectasias): Results can be seen in up to 2 weeks.

Most patients do not experience any side effects, and any skin reaction usually resolves within a few hours. Some patients may find, however, that they are sensitive to sunlight immediately after treatment. It is recommended to avoid direct sunlight and tanning after treatment.

Lumecca IPL ranges from mildly painful and uncomfortable to significantly painful and uncomfortable. Many have also described the treatment as feeling like a rubber band hitting them combined with the sensation of heat.

If you are concerned about undergoing a painful treatment, please speak with our staff so that we can take steps to provide you with a more enjoyable experience.

IPL, which stands for intense pulsed light, is an FDA-approved photo therapy used to treat several kinds of conditions.

While the first use of an IPL device dates back to 1996, intense pulsed light didn’t really enter the public’s awareness until the early 2000s.

Since then it has rapidly grown in popularity and is now widely used by medical spas in the United States and other countries around the world as a safe and rapid treatment modality for certain skin conditions.

One of the reasons intense pulsed light therapy is thought to be effective is its ability to produce a non-coherent light over a wide spectrum, which sets it apart from other laser systems that use only a single wavelength.

The theoretical advantage of a wide spectrum, non-coherent light is that it’s better at promoting absorption of melanin, hemoglobin, and blood vessels.

Additional Background Information:

Photorejuvenation was invented by Thomas L Roberts III in the 1900s using CO2 lasers.

CO2 resurfacing treatments are more likely to cause scarring and hypopigmentation than IPL treatments due to ablation.

The big difference between these treatment types is that CO2 lasers offer a concentrated, ablative treatment that stimulates cellular rejuvenation. Meanwhile, IPL treatments are non-ablative.

While it’s true that CO2 lasers offer potentially faster results, they also require one to two weeks of recovery.

Those with sensitive skin, or those who would prefer less downtime, would be better off getting treated with Lumecca.

It depends on what your needs are, but generally speaking, we would say yes.

Compared to other IPL treatment modalities, Lumecca works on a wider range of skin types and also treats a wider range of skin conditions.

Other advantages of Lumecca include:

-A cooling sapphire tip that reduces the amount of heat you experience
-No peeling (and usually no redness)
-Not needing as many treatments as compared to other IPL treatment modalities
-Shorter treatment times

We can lift, lighten, fill, tighten, smooth, soften, and rejuvenate a patient’s aesthetic features with little to no recovery time involved.

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Research

Before the invention of IPL, only short-term improvements had been observed with non-ablative photo-rejuvenation.

After IPL was invented, to test its impact, 47 patients with photodamaged skin underwent a series of IPL treatments at
three to four week intervals for a period of six months during a clinical study.

Results
After the six month period, the study participants showed a marked improvement in wrinkles, facial vascularity, large pore size, and dyschromia.

A quote from the study states that, “This clinical study demonstrates that non-ablative facial rejuvenation is associated with long-term clinical improvement of facial rhytids, abnormal vascularity and pigmentary disorders with minimal risks and side effects to the patient.”
